Evita - Theatre

Friday, April 27, 2018

The Tony Award winning musical Evita is ennobled by the hauntingly beautiful songs of Andrew Lloyd Webber and is set amidst the turmoil of Argentinian politics of the late 1940s and early 1950s. The story unfolds through Eva Peron who grew up in obscure poverty to then rise to the heights of national and international prestige through her own sheer force of will by creating her own public image and myth. Eva Peron made herself into the common people's idol; loved, adored, hated and she festooned herself in the political manipulations that best elicited the adoration of her audience. As the only woman in Latin America to have ever risen to such power and influence, to this day her legend is intriguing to the modern understanding of how we choose to follow our political leaders, and how we grieve for them when they fall into the grip of human frailty. "Don't Cry for Me Argentina", "Buenos Aires" and "A New Argentina" are some of many songs made famous by this musical.
