Supersonic Americruiser
Exhibit: June 10 - July 3, 2025
Reception: Friday, June 13, 5:00-7:00pmStep into the wild, satirical world of Supersonic Americruiser, a mixed media exhibition by Oklahoma-based artist Robert Dohrmann. Featuring over 150 works built from vintage ephemera, thrift store finds, and cultural detritus, Dohrmann invites viewers on a layered journey through the peculiarities of American material culture—past and present.
With absurdist flair and sharp critique, Supersonic Americruiser unpacks themes of mass consumerism, domestic nostalgia, corporate decay, and the kitsch aesthetics of middle-class Americana. From shadow box clocks to reimagined LP covers and reassembled knick-knack shelves, these 2D and 3D works recontextualize the “junk” of yesteryear, offering biting commentary on capitalism, climate, patriarchy, and privilege—through a lens of dark humor and satire.
Drawing from the discarded icons of mid-century consumerism—Sears catalogs, bourgeois wall art, plastic globes—Dohrmann practices what he calls “re-arting”: remixing forgotten objects into vibrant, critical works of “utilitarian fine art.” With the eye of a cultural anthropologist and the spirit of a trickster, he exposes the performative nature of American values, asking us to reflect on what we wanted, what we still want, and what we’ve become.
